- Southeast Asia SRI Network Launches New Website

- IndoSRInet Spearheads New SRI Global Research Network
[January 1, 2024] The newly reformed System of Rice Intensification (SRI) Global Research Network is jointly hosted by the Indonesian SRI Research and Innovation Network (IndoSRInet) and the SRI-Rice Center at Cornell University. The Network provides access to a wealth of cutting-edge SRI research, which is accessible through a comprehensive upgraded Zotero library offering research abstracts, metadata, and full-text content of refereed and high quality material. The first SRI Research Newsletter will be published during May 2024. [Subscription information is at the bottom of the newsletter page.] In addition, the Network will provide comprehensive updates on the latest research news in the field of SRI as well as news on funding and educational opportunities.
2023
- IndoSRInet Co-Organizes SRI Delegation to 6th International Rice Congress in Manila
[October 30, 2023] A delegation from the global SRI community attended the 6th International Rice Congress (IRC) in Manila, Philippines, held October 16-19, 2023. The group included SRI representatives from Chile, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, the Philippines, UK, and USA. Various members of the group, including members of the Indonesian delegation, made scientific presentations and answered queries at the SRI booth at the IRC. They subsequently participated in side events, including a SRI Research Network meeting, a Philippines Dept. of Agriculture SRI Forum, a SRI meeting for national/regional SRI networks around the world, and SRI trips to the provinces of La Union, Quezon, and Davao del Norte. The visit was hosted by the SRI-Pilipinas network, organized by SRI-Rice (a program at Cornell University), SRI Global (an NGO in Ithaca, New York) and IndoSRInet (the Indonesian SRI network), and funded by SRI-2030 (an NGO in the UK). In addition to the IRC events, several participants from Indonesia and elsewhere gave presentations at a Department of Agriculture Forum on SRI on October 20, 2023.
- IndoSRInet to Host Open House on February 15, 2023
[February 9, 2023] The Indonesian SRI Research and Innovation Network (IndoSRInet) hosted an online open house on February 15, 2023. This online meeting included: 1) an introduction to IndoSRINet, 2) a get-together with SRI scientists from all over Indonesia (over 50 Indonesian universities are producing SRI research!), 3) a discussion of future plans for the advancement of SRI in Indonesia, and 4) an introduction to the SRI Research Database and Zotero. - Indonesian Research on the System of Rice Intensification Reaches 357 Items
[December 31, 2022] Fifty-one research items (journal articles, theses, and conferencence papers) have been added to the Indonesian SRI Research Collection on the SRI Research Network's Zotero database during 2022. Thirty-four of these were journal articles. The complete list of Indonesian SRI research (357 items) can be found here. - New Indonesian SRI Network Launched
[October 29, 2021] Febri Doni (Assistant Prof. at Padjadjaran Unviersity) and Dr. Novizar Nazir (Prof. at Andalas University) have initiated a new Indonesian SRI Research and Innovation Network called IndoSRInet, which builds upon the previous Ina-SRI network. Ina-SRI, which was led by Profs. Iswandi Anas and Budi Setiawan, operated out of the Institut Pertanian Bogor for over a decade. IndoSRInet, which now operates from Padjadjaran University in Sumedang, West Java, is a non-profit organization working to improve food security in Indonesia through the adoption of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and other agroecological approaches related to SRI. During October 2021, the new network launched both a website and a Facebook page and became a partner of the SRI-Rice Research Network, helping curate the Indonesian SRI research collection maintained at Cornell University on a Zotero platform. - Study Shows How SRI Lowers GHG emissions while Raising Yields Under Varying Water Table Levels
[June 16, 2019] An article in the journal Paddy and Water Environment by Hasanah et al estimates the impact on global warming potential (GWP) of GHG emissions from rice paddies when an SRI crop is managed with different water table levels. This study estimated the impact on global warming potential (GWP) of GHG emissions from rice paddies when an SRI crop is managed with different water table levels. In this study, CO2 equivalence was assessed using a Simple Greenhouse Gas model, and an artificial neural network model for assessing CH4 and N2O. SRI paddy rice was grown in experimental pots under varying water table treatments, with the water table controlled by using Mariotte tubes set at + 2, 0, − 3, − 5, − 7, and − 12 cm from the soil surface. GHG emissions, which could be monitored more closely in pot trials than in fields, are a composite of the plants’ respiration, soil respiration (which is a result primarily of microbial activity), and the respiration that results from root exudates. With SRI practices, rice paddies can serve as a sink rather than a source for CH4 as seen from the negative values for CH4 emissions at all water table treatments. While there were N2O emissions with SRI practice, they were much less in terms of CO2 equivalence than the GWP reduction achieved by reducing CH4. Overall, under the experimental conditions the best water table level for SRI cultivation, with the most rice produced relative to GHG emissions, was − 5 cm from the soil surface. For each kg of grain produced, there were 0.80 kg CO2 eq of GHG emissions. By comparison, a normally flooded paddy field with usual crop management methods emits 1.97 kg CO2 eq per kg of grain produced, almost 150% more. This finding that a water table of − 5 cm is optimal will not necessarily apply for all field conditions, but the research addresses the desirability of seeking to optimize between GHG reductions and increased yield when growing paddy rice, and of developing appropriate methodology for achieving this composite objective
2018
- Indonesia Represented at SRI Asia Networks Workshop in Johor, Malaysia
[November 1, 2018] Chusnul Arif (Institut Pertanian Bogor), Ahmad Jatika (Nusantara Organic SRI Centre), and Aep Saifudin (SRI trainer/farmer), represented Indonesia at a workshop for SRI national networks held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 18-19, 2018. The Workshop to Enhance Cooperation and Sharing among SRI National Networks in Asia, which was organized by the Malaysian Agroecology Society (SRI-Mas), the ACISAI Centre at the Asian Institute of Technology, and SRI-Rice, was intended to share experiences and to investigate opportunities to collaborate on scaling-up, multi-country research, value chain improvements, accessing resources, and capacity building for SRI networks. The event also mapped out the possibilities for forming an Asia SRI Regional Network from the existing SRI networks in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. On behalf of Budi Indra Setiawan, the current Indonesian SRI Network (Ina-SRI) head, Chusnul Arif made a presentation on the current state of SRI promotion and adoption in Indonesia and discussed how the Indonesian SRI network could possibly benefit from and contribute to an SRI Regional Network for Asia. The details of the operation of the planned SRI Asia Network, which will possibly be headquartered at the Asian Institute for Technology's ACISAI Centre, are expected to be worked out during 2019.
- SRI Research from Indonesia Presented at 5th
International Rice Congress in Singapore
[October 21, 2018] Dr. Budi Setiawan was among a nmber of Indonesians who participated in the 5th International Rice Congress, held October 16-18, 2018, in Singapore. In addition to his SRI presentation made during the regular conference sessions, he took part of a side event on SRI Research that provided an overview of global research on SRI. The opening session of SRI-Rice-sponsored side event (SRI Research: What's New and What's on the Horizon), took note of the growing body of research on SRI being carried out in Indonesia; over 150 published scientific research items are now included in the Global SRI Research Network's Indonesia collection. Setiawan presented Water Table Management under SRI during the side event panel on Water/GHG/Climate Effects. He is shown at right together with several other SRI Network heads from Asia: Left to right are: Dr. Hoang Van Phu (SRI-Viet, Vietnam), Dr. Anizan Isahak (SRI-Mas, Malaysia), Dr. Budi Setiawan (Ina-SRI, Indonesia), Dr. Debashish Sen (National SRI Consortium, India), and Dr. Yamaji Eiji, (J-SRI, Japan).
- Anticipating the Impacts of Climate Change by Implementing SRI in East Sumba
[July 14, 2018] According to a Gadja Mada University (UGM) article, the governor of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) has mandated the use of SRI (System of Rice Intensification) methods throughout the province as a result of significant increases in rice production in demonstration plots undertaken during the past year in Tarus by Dr. Bayu Dwi Apri Nugroho and DTPB UGM colleagues. The project was funded by Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund (ICCTF). Responding to the mandate of the Governor, Nugroho and colleagues will conduct follow-up activities together with PUPR, Agriculture and Food Security, BAPPEDA and others agencies. On June 26, 2018, a meeting was held to discuss the new location in East Sumba. This activity is slightly different from the previous activities by adding a growth system monitoring tool that will include real time measuring devices. In addition to involving the relevant agencies in NTT, this ICCTF-funded activity also involves the Christian University Artha Wacana in Kupang (UKAW) which is expected increase sustainability through continual support.
2017 Updates
- SRI Research Suggests GHG Mitigation Strategies Based on Soil Moisture
Management
[December 2017] An article in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology by N.A.I. Hasanah, et al, helps to further clarify some of complicated greenhouse gas emissions due to biophysical processes in SRI fields in order to help determine the proper mitigation action to take. This study was carried out to produce a simple method to estimate CH4 and N2O emissions using easily measure environmental parameters that might be used to simulate the mitigation of non-CO2 emissions. Two Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were developed to estimate methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes based on three selected variables. Based on the models, patterns of CH4 and N2O emissions in SRI paddy fields were presented in the form of a triangle graph that can be used to estimate emissions from the easily measured soil pH, soil moisture and air temperature. ANN models were developed to estimate emission fluxes based on three selected variables of soil pH, soil moisture and air temperature that could produce R2 0.96 and 0.82 for CH4 and N2O, respectively. CH4 emission in the SRI paddy field increased with air temperature but decreased when soil moisture decreased, while N2O emissions were mostly stable at all times regardless of changes in soil moisture and air temperature. In general, a higher soil pH produced higher CH4 and N2O emissions. The triangle graph shows that in SRI paddy field with soil pH, soil moisture and air temperature range 4.30-5.30, 0.354-0.524 m3 m-3, 29.0-32.5EC, respectively; it could be a sink or emission of methane until more than 45 mg m-2 day-1 and be able to emit nitrous oxide to more than 6 µg m-2 day-1. The study corroborated that SRI paddy field can be emission source of CH4 and N2O. The graphs can be used to identify mitigation action that can be implemented to lower emissions by showing the set-point value of soil moisture. For example, in an air temperature of 29.4oC and soil pH condition of 4.8, to minimize the emission of CH4 and N2O, the soil moisture should be less than 0.418 m3 m-3. [See article for details.]
- Successful SRI Trials in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Show Promise for Dealing with Climate Change
[October 23, 2017] East Nusa Tenggara Governor Frans Lebu Raya (third left) and Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund (ICCTF) executive director Tonny Wagey (second left) harvest paddy grown using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method in Kupang on Saturday. According to an article in the Jakarta Post, the ICCTF and Gadjah Mada University’s School of Agriculture are evaluating SRI method with farmers in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). (Click on the photo to see the enlarged picture in the original article). A Republika article noted that the Governor hopes SRI can be extended through the province of NTT. It is hoped that SRI, which was successfully demonstrated in the villages of Baumata dan Tarus, will help farmers deal with water shortages and climate change. - New SRI Field Manual Available from IPB
[October 17, 2017] A new Indonesian language SRI field manual, Pedoman Awal Aplikasi SRI di Lapangan, has been published by the IPB Press. Authored by Chusnul Arif, Budi Indra Setiawan, and Sutardi, this 80-page publication is based on laboratory and field research by the authors as well as others, who have shown that the System of Rice Intensification can be an effective alternative rice production strategy for both helping farmers to adapt to climate change as well as mitigate its effects on the environment. The manual can be acquired by writing to Chusnul Arif (chusnulipb@gmail.com). See the table of contents to for more details on what is included in the publication.
- SRI Research Network's Indonesia Collection Passes the 100 Mark!
[July 26, 2017] The number of research items in the SRI Research Network's Indonesia collection reached 100 in mid-July, 2017. The collection, which includes works in both Bahasa Indonesia and English, consists of journal articles, theses, and conference presentations about SRI research and evaluations carried out in Indonesia. The entire global collection, which uses a Zotero database, had 1,153 entries as of July 2017. The metadata about the items is available to the general public. However, in order to gain full text access, please join the SRI Research Network. (There is no charge to join the network. Just 1) sign up for Zotero, 2) go to the SRI Research Network Group site and push the red "join button" underneath the group description. You will have full access once we approve the request).
2016
- Article on Photosynthesis and Transpiration Rates in SRI Clarifies Effects on Growth and Yield
[July 2016] A forthcoming article by Hidayati et al in the HAYATI Journal of Bioscience has furthered our understanding of photosynthesis and transpiration rates of rice cultivated with SRI methods and the effects these have on growth and yield. Some of the physiological parameters and the mechanism of rice yield improvement with SRI methods were studied during both vegetative and generative phases and compared to conventional rice cultivation methods. SRI practices significantly increased both vegetative and reproductive (generative) parameters of rice plants compared to conventional cultivation methods. Photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll content, N and P uptake under SRI cultivation were significantly higher compared to those of the conventional rice cultivation, although no differences were found in transpiration rate and leaf temperature. Plants in their generative phase (especially in the grain-filling phase) with SRI methods had the highest photosynthetic and the lowest transpiration rates. SRI grain yield was significantly higher (ca. 24%) than that grown with conventional methods. (See full article for further discussion of the findings).
